NEP Webinar: Eating Heart Healthy: Exploring Issues of Low Seafood Consumption in America - 13 Apr 2017

Join the Nutrition Education for the Public Dietetic Practice Group at 3:00 p.m. Eastern on Thursday, April 13, 2017 for a 90-minute webinar as we explore seafood consumption and heart health. Seafood consumption is recommended by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and by the American Heart Association to reduce cardiovascular events. However, only 10% of Americans follow the dietary guidelines to eat seafood at least twice a week. Significant barriers to a heart healthy diet incorporating seafood exist, particularly in low income populations. This session will provide an update on current seafood consumption in the US, health implications of low seafood consumption, and analysis of common myths and misconceptions. Research regarding omega-3 fats, the role of seafood in meeting omega-3 fat needs, and tips for encouraging consumption and building awareness of new seafood trends will be provided. Practical suggestions regarding seafood consumption in relation to wild-caught and farmed fish and the dietary guidelines will be discussed.
