HEN Webinar: Combining Colonization, Climate Change, and Sugar: A Not So Sweet Recipe
Thursday, June 28, 2018
2:00-3:00PM EST

Please join us for a webinar presented by Sara Jolena Wolcott, M. Div. Sara is the director of Sequoia Samanvaya, an education and sustainable development creativity company. After nearly a decade working in international sustainable development, tracing the links between health, agriculture, culture/religion, and climate change, she now teaches on the relationship between colonization and climate change and actively engages in practical and spiritual responses to climate change in her home in the Bronx, nationally, and internationally (especially in India and Europe). Her students describe her courses as “transformational.” She has had a private, one-on-one healing practice for over 17 years.

Sugar is one of the leading contributors to chronic illness and one of the most common substances in people’s diets. But where does the global obsession with the processed substance come from? Delving into this history reveals connections between ideas and issues all too important and all too commonly disconnected: between ecology and society, between colonization and the destruction of natural resources, between slavery and the process of industrialization; between contemporary health crises and historical structures of both social, ecological and religious violence. Learn some of the key historical moments that gave rise to our current addiction to sugar and come away with new ways of looking at this familiar – but not so sweet – substance.
